Descripción

4.0 ai enhancement
What is the problem this feature would solve?

effect/ai can run an agent backend (LanguageModel.streamText, tools, layers), but there is no standard way to stream that output to a browser UI. Connecting one today means writing the SSE endpoint, the request shape, the event mapping, and a matching client by hand for every app.

AG-UI (Agent–User Interaction Protocol) is an open, event-based wire protocol for streaming agent output to UI clients over HTTP/SSE. It defines one request shape (RunAgentInput) and a fixed set of event types (RUN_STARTED, TEXT_MESSAGE_CONTENT, TOOL_CALL_*, RUN_FINISHED, RUN_ERROR, and so on). It covers agent-to-UI the way MCP, already supported here, covers agent-to-tools.

What is the feature you are proposing to solve the problem?

AG-UI protocol support in effect/unstable/ai, so an Effect HTTP server can run the LLM calls (LanguageModel.streamText, tools, layers) and be driven by any AG-UI client. One such client is a React frontend using @tanstack/ai-react (useChat + fetchServerSentEvents). TanStack AI is fully AG-UI compliant, so it would work unmodified.
