Summary
Microsoft has announced the retirement of standalone Azure Communication Services (ACS) services, including Email, by 30 September 2028 (Azure Service Health tracking ID SQZR-8H8). Starting 23 October 2026, new customers can no longer sign up for the retiring services.
WordPress on App Service currently uses ACS Email for outgoing mail via the App Service Email plugin and the WP_EMAIL_CONNECTION_STRING app setting, as described in wordpress_email_integration.md. New sites have this integration enabled by default.
Questions
- What is the recommended email solution for WordPress on App Service once ACS Email is retired?
- Will the App Service Email plugin be updated to support a successor service, or deprecated?
- Will new WordPress on App Service deployments created after 23 October 2026 still get the ACS Email integration?
- Is there a recommended migration path for existing sites (plugin, app settings, custom domain SPF/DKIM)?
