Research direction

Start with ROADMAP.md and guides/maintenance-workflow.md, then check the existing public navigation and documented CI instructions. Draft a bounded handoff recipe with a fictional filled checklist and before/after example, covering the acceptance criteria while keeping private operational details out. Add structural regression coverage, verify the guide against current official sources, date its claims, run full documented CI, and confirm MIT remains unchanged.

Description

Source-backed roadmap gap (reviewed 2026-10-21)

BeautifulRepo's roadmap promises useful adaptations of Open Source Guides on governance and sustainability, but the existing maintenance workflow mainly describes changing code and running checks. It does not yet show a concrete handoff when one maintainer becomes unavailable or a project changes owners.

Open Source Guides — Best Practices for Maintainers emphasizes documented decision-making, scope, contribution and review processes, realistic volunteer capacity, and sharing workload. GitHub contributor guidelines show where a reader expects contribution expectations. This should produce a reusable working recipe, not another links page.

Acceptance: one bounded, reusable product outcome

  • Write a compact owner/handoff checklist or example for a fictional one-maintainer repository: critical entry points, contribution triage, release decision ownership, CI recovery, outstanding issues, source-of-truth for docs, and how to state a pause honestly.
  • Show an example before/after maintainer handoff, including an actual checklist filled with fictional values; separate verified public repository artifacts from information that should stay private.
  • Distinguish optional contributors, maintainers with write access, and GitHub admin permission. Do not create CODEOWNERS, grant permissions, change admin settings, invent security-reporting channels or demand response-time SLAs.
  • Include a practical next-30-minutes route to reproduce project checks from a checkout; update the appropriate public navigation and keep MIT unchanged.
  • Explain constraints (single maintainer, no backup, archive/transfer decisions require authorization) rather than claiming high availability.
  • Add useful structural regression coverage and run full documented CI. Review the guide against current official sources and date its claims.

Priority: P2 research→application. Distinct from #30, which concerns actual community conduct and security reporting readiness, and from #32, which is a real applied-repository case study.

Boundary: no external actions, private scheduler/control exposure, repository transfer, new accounts, or representation outside the project.
