Research direction

Find TestReleaseCompletionGeneration and the completion script it exercises, then read how the test chooses supported hosts and passes the binary path to Bash. Check the test against the script’s host list and run the focused test on Windows, Linux, and macOS where available. Done means Windows passes with a Bash-compatible path or skips with a message naming the unsupported host, while Linux and macOS behavior stays unchanged.

Description

Problem

The release completion test (TestReleaseCompletionGeneration) treats Windows as a native release host, because it mirrors the host list in the completion script. On a Windows machine with Git Bash, the test passes the binary's drive-prefixed path (C:\…) to a Bash script, which cannot use it. Nobody hits this today: CI runs only one file-system test on Windows, and releases are built on Linux. A Windows contributor running the full test suite would see a failure that says nothing about their change.

Raised by CodeRabbit on #8162 (second review cycle after its reshape record); deferred here so that PR can finish.

Acceptance criteria

  • On a Windows host, the test either gives the script a path Bash can use, or skips with a message naming the unsupported host.
  • The host list in the test and in the completion script still agree.
  • Linux and macOS behaviour is unchanged.
