The report names upstream commit 6a2875517c778ac1111b6920e94cbab91cda8724 as the fix for FAT16 directory traversal on the Raspberry Pi 6.12.109 kernel. Start by checking that commit against the kernel's FAT directory-reading code and whether the 6.12 branch already contains it. The reporter's disk image and CompactFlash test are not in the repo, so reproduction needs their data. Done means a maintainer decides whether to backport, which is not a first-timer task.

Beschreibung

Describe the bug

Hi,
I've encountered a reproducible FAT16 directory-reading problem when accessing CompactFlash cards written by a Psion Series 7/NetBook running EPOC32. But i believe its a generic problem across portable media.

Steps to reproduce the behaviour

On the Raspberry Pi 6.12.109 kernel, directory traversal produces spurious entries and I/O errors. Investigation showed residual directory data beyond the FAT end-of-directory marker.

I identified a upstream Linux commit:

"6a2875517c778ac1111b6920e94cbab91cda8724"

I applied this fix to the Raspberry Pi 6.12.109 kernel source, built and installed a test kernel on a sacrificial Raspberry Pi 4, and verified that:

  • The previously problematic FAT16 disk image traverses correctly.
  • The physical CompactFlash card traverses correctly.
  • File comparisons between the image and physical card succeed.
  • A complete backup and file export workflow completes successfully.

Could this upstream fix be incorporated into the supported Raspberry Pi OS kernel, particularly the 6.12 branch if it remains maintained?

I can provide reproduction details and test results if useful.
