Summary

Extend Java: Install New JDK to offer provider-supported non-LTS releases and, through an explicit opt-in, early-access builds. Java 27 support in the language support extension makes this a useful separate onboarding enhancement.

This is not a blocker for recognizing or using a manually installed JDK 27, and it should not change the default recommendation from the latest LTS release.

Current behavior

Verified against Java Pack main at 0823dbde1947de111c39890fc095f55c0ff0d258:

  • The Adoptium installation panel renders only available_lts_releases.
  • The release metadata type already includes available_releases, but non-LTS releases are not presented by this panel.
  • Merely adding a version number to the UI would not be sufficient for early-access support: asset lookup must use the appropriate provider-supported release/build type and check availability for the current OS and architecture.

Proposed scope

  • Allow selecting available non-LTS GA releases.
  • Add an explicit, clearly labelled early-access option if the provider exposes suitable artifacts.
  • Offer JDK 27 when a compatible provider artifact is actually available; do not advertise unavailable downloads.
  • Keep the latest LTS selected by default and clearly distinguish LTS, non-LTS, and EA builds.
  • Keep provider/version metadata dynamic rather than introducing a hard-coded list for Java 27.

Acceptance criteria

  • The latest LTS remains the default selection.
  • Available non-LTS releases can be selected and installed.
  • EA builds, if offered, require explicit selection and are labelled as early access.
  • Asset selection matches the chosen version/build type, OS, and architecture.
  • Missing artifacts or provider errors produce a clear availability/error state rather than an indefinite loading indicator.
  • Existing LTS downloads and recognition of manually installed runtimes remain unchanged.

Context

vscode-java 1.57.0 adds Java 27 project support. Updating the language server's tooling JDK requirement is a separate compatibility fix; this issue concerns the installation UX.
