Description

On a self-hosted install without ASSEMBLY_API_KEY, every processed video logs a transcription failure, e.g.:

[media-server-webhook] Failed to queue transcription … Missing necessary environment variables

Nothing is actually broken: transcription just isn't set up. I'd expect Cap to skip transcription quietly when no provider is configured, the way queueFinalizedRecordingTranscription in apps/web/workflows/finalize-desktop-recording.ts already does (if (!serverEnv().ASSEMBLY_API_KEY) return true;).

The other entry points don't have that check:

  • queueVideoTranscription in apps/web/lib/queue-video-transcription.ts (media-server webhook, multipart complete, segment finalization)
  • queueProcessedVideoTranscription in apps/web/workflows/process-video.ts
  • queueTranscriptionRegeneration in apps/web/workflows/edit-video.ts
Reproduction
  1. Self-host cap-web + cap-media-server without ASSEMBLY_API_KEY.
  2. Record or upload a video.
  3. The web logs show the transcription failure (twice per video in our case).
Additional Context
  • Cap version: ghcr.io/capsoftware/cap-web built 2026-09-07 from c5f22d7; the same code paths are on main as of 4e2377f61
  • Operating system, version: Kubernetes, MySQL 8.0, S3-compatible storage

I have a small fix with unit tests (same early return in the three places, 9 lines + 2 tests that fail on main and pass with the fix) and am happy to open a PR if that's welcome.
