Research direction

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating the existing interfaces for reading unpacked repository files, then determine how a streaming API should behave for multi-GB data and add tests that demonstrate incremental reading is complete.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

Especially for an unpacked repo of large files (shallow clone of multi-gb dataset for example), it'd be REALLY nice to have a streaming interface to read data with.
