Research direction

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the database implementations and their read and write request paths, then inspect how hashes are currently handled. Done means reads accept either partial or full hashes while writes provide only full hashes, with behavior verified across the affected database implementations.

Description

enhancement

Since git allows you to use short hash's, being the first 6 characters of the hash, it'd be good if db implementations could also accept a partial hash.

I think it should be that:

  • Any read request should be able to provide the partial hash or the full hash, the db should be able to search on eithre
  • Write operations should only ever give the full hash, it's up to the db to decide if it wants to store the partial hash or it can work it out on-the-fly, or how to handle it
