Research direction

Start with tools/parity/views.json and the parity runner’s handling of --abort; reproduce the two named views with Bing blocked to inspect their failures. Compare the proposed skip, fixture, and Blue Marble options, including Bing’s terms before checking in tiles. Done means the abort run passes or skips every affected Earth view with a reason, and a full parity run spends no ion imagery session.

Description

cesium track:platform

Found in #202's testing.

Problem

#202 asks ion for Bing imagery (asset 2) only up close, because the account ran out of imagery sessions (1038 of 1000 in a week), and yarn parity --abort 'api\.cesium\.com/v1/assets/2/' keeps a run from spending one. With Bing blocked, two Earth views don't work:

  • earth-ridge-day: ref blue/red is 2.70 (the check expects about 1), on main too.
  • earth-dead-sea-band: doesn't settle, run to run, on main too.

Both are close-up views where Bing's imagery would be in use. With Bing blocked they can't pass, and with it allowed they cost a session per run, so the parity check can't run on them in CI or on a PR preview without spending the quota.

Options

  • Mark such views in tools/parity/views.json (e.g. needsBing), skip them under --abort, and run them by hand before changes to Earth's close-up rendering.
  • Serve Bing's tiles for those two views from a recorded fixture through page.route, so no session is spent and the views are deterministic. Check Bing's terms before checking tiles in.
  • Compare the two views on the Blue Marble layer alone (their checks are about the terrain over the sphere's horizon and the band under the datum, not the imagery), with a view-specific ref.

Done when

yarn parity --abort <bing regex> passes or skips every Earth view with a stated reason, and a full yarn parity run spends no ion imagery session.
