Research direction

Read CESIUM.md at “relief on the Moon’s tiles” and inspect the celestiary moon_normal.jpg texture setup alongside textureGrad and CESIUM_BODIES.moon.relief. Start by setting anisotropy up to 4 using the renderer’s maximum and measure lit-edge RMS for both Moons at #192 view A and the ev=10 view. Done means RMS differs by no more than one pixel and moon-quarter’s mean is unchanged or closer to 1.000; if filtering is not the cause, investigate the alternatives named in the issue.

Description

cesium track:rendering

Noted in #206's description ("Not chased") and in CESIUM.md, relief on the Moon's tiles.

Problem

With the LOLA normal map on both Moons, at the user's ev=10 view Cesium's terminator is rougher than celestiary's: lit-edge RMS 5.1 px against 3.0. Likely cause: the tiles' shader reads the map with 4× anisotropic filtering (textureGrad, CESIUM_BODIES.moon.relief), while three reads celestiary's normal map without any. The swap between the two Moons then shows a change in the terminator's sharpness, where #206 meant it to be seamless. It also leaves the mean of Cesium's lit disc about 1% brighter at moon-quarter (1.017 against 1.000 at the median).

The work

  • Set anisotropy on celestiary's moon_normal.jpg texture to match (renderer.capabilities.getMaxAnisotropy() capped at 4), and re-measure the lit-edge RMS on both sides at the user's view.
  • If it isn't the cause, find what is (mip bias, the tangent frame, the tiles' geometry normal).

Done when

The lit-edge RMS on both sides agrees within a pixel at #192's view A and the ev=10 link, and moon-quarter is unchanged or closer to 1.000 in the mean.
