`fold` always fails on Xcode 27.1 RC: its pose check calls `devicectl device motion hinge-angle`, which this devicectl doesn't have

Research direction

Start at the fold pose check, which runs devicectl device motion hinge-angle and emits the 'Unknown option' hint, and at the apple_fold_pose_dispatched logging just before it. Reproduce on an iPhone Duo simulator with iOS 27.1 using fold open, and confirm the command runs even though devicectl 651.13.5 lacks motion. Done means that a devicectl without motion either verifies the pose another way or reports a distinct 'dispatched but unverified' error code, and that fold closed behaves the same way.

Description

Environment

  • agent-device 0.21.13 (reproduced). The latest, 0.21.27, has the same check (devicectl device motion hinge-angle --device <udid> --session-timeout 1 --timeout 5) and the same hint, with no other way to verify the pose.
  • Xcode 27.1 RC, build 27A9275. devicectl 651.13.5.
  • macOS 27.0.
  • Simulator: iPhone Duo (com.apple.CoreSimulator.SimDeviceType.iPhone-Duo) on iOS 27.1 (24A94232).

Steps

  1. Create and boot a stock Duo simulator:
xcrun simctl create "Duo test" com.apple.CoreSimulator.SimDeviceType.iPhone-Duo com.apple.CoreSimulator.SimRuntime.iOS-27-1
    xcrun simctl boot <udid>

  2. Open Settings, then unfold:
agent-device open com.apple.Preferences --device "Duo test"
    agent-device fold open

Expected: fold open reports the verified pose open.

Actual: within about a second it fails:

Error (COMMAND_FAILED): CoreDevice reported no hinge angle sample: Unknown option '--device'
Hint: This Xcode/CoreDevice toolchain does not stream 'devicectl device motion hinge-angle' for this device. Foldable poses can be verified only through that stream; update Xcode to a version that ships it.

But the fold has already happened:

  • The request log shows apple_fold_pose_dispatched with the requested pose before the failure.
  • agent-device screenshot now reports the inner panel's size (951x669). Settings is shown in landscape split view.
  • fold closed fails the same way and brings back the outer panel (466x678).

Why: devicectl 651.13.5 has no motion subcommand. xcrun devicectl help device lists appResize, capture, copy, info, install, notification, orientation, pairings, pasteboard, process, profile, reboot, rename, settings, simulate, sysdiagnose, uninstall, and xcrun devicectl device motion hinge-angle --device <udid> fails with Error: Unknown option '--device'. devicectl device info displays --device <udid> still works on this build and lists both integrated panels.

Suggestion: on a devicectl without device motion, verify the pose another way. For example, use the lit panel's size from a capture, as fold already reports it. Or report the pose as dispatched but unverified, with its own error code, so callers can tell "sent, not verified" from "failed".
