Research direction

Start in R/predictive_checks_dependence.R: read check_partner_dependence() and plot.dyadMLM_partner_check() to see how the grid is currently built with par(mfrow = ...), then thread a panel_columns argument through, switching to par(mfcol = ...) when 2 is requested. Check the expected arrangements against tests/testthat/test-predictive-checks-panels.R, extend it for six and four plots, invalid counts, default and panels = FALSE, and document the option with a taller figure. Done when the new and existing panel tests pass and calculations/results are untouched.

Description

enhancement good first issue priority: low

Add an optional two-column layout for partner-dependence plots. Wider plots can be easier to read in portrait PDF and Word reports. Keep the current default.

This follows #45's composition-based panels.

plot(check, panel_columns = 2, ask = FALSE)
  • Add panel_columns = 3 to check_partner_dependence() and plot.dyadMLM_partner_check(). Accept 2 or 3; ignore it when panels = FALSE.
  • Keep the default: six plots in a 2x3 grid, or four in a 2x2 grid, filled across rows.
  • With panel_columns = 2, use a 3x2 grid for six plots and a 2x2 grid for four. Fill down columns in both cases.
  • Group member SDs and partner correlation before the dyad-average and difference summaries. Preserve one figure per composition, headings, dyad counts, pausing, and restoration of graphics settings.
  • Test positions and order for six and four plots, unchanged default and panels = FALSE behavior, and rejection of invalid column counts when panels are used.
  • Document the option with a taller report figure. It changes the arrangement, not graphics-device dimensions.

For four plots with panel_columns = 2:

Left column Right column
Top Common member SD Dyad-average SD
Bottom Partner correlation Half-difference RMS

Start in R/predictive_checks_dependence.R and tests/testthat/test-predictive-checks-panels.R. Base R's par(mfcol = ...) fills down columns; par(mfrow = ...) fills across rows. Keep calculations and stored results unchanged.
