Research direction

Start by locating the plot-generation tests and the plotting or graphical-backend setup they exercise. Run the full test suite or a relevant subset to reproduce the windows. Done means plotting behavior is still checked while no graphical windows require manual closing during tests.

Description

testing

When running the test suite or a sub-set of it, the generated plots often open in windows, as would be expected from interactive or script use, but which becomes annoying for working whist the test suite is running because those windows require manual closing and this interferes with other work to do whilst waiting for the results.

We should programatically check that any graphical windows for plots will open as an important part of testing, but without the windows actually being opened for the tester to have to close.
