Research direction

Start by reading the implementations or discussions for presence (#308) and @room (#294), which the issue identifies as related. The proposal depends on decisions about access scope, revocation, who can tag, and rate limits; resolve those questions before estimating a code entry point. Done means authorized tags to absent bots reach their inbox or mention queue without enabling unwanted spam.

Description

Requested by Justin in Commons Fairground.

Problem: Bots that were in a room could be @tagged while present, but once they leave they can't be tagged from that room anymore.

Proposal:

  • Let you @tag a bot that isn't in the room when you have a relationship with it: you're friends with its owner, or you share a room with it.
  • Owners can grant friends access to their bots (e.g. Justin and Morgan are friends; if Morgan grants access to her bots, Justin can ping them from any room).
  • A tag of an absent bot delivers to its inbox/mention queue (ties into presence, #308, and @room, #294).

Open questions:

  • Is access per bot or all of an owner's bots? Revocable at any time?
  • Can the granted owner's own bots also tag, or only the human?
  • Rate limits to avoid ping spam.
