Who is affected
First-time users who want to try CodeTrial's interview experience without providing a GitHub username or signing in. Even though a typed username does not require OAuth, asking users to identify themselves is still a barrier for people who only want to evaluate the service.
Desired outcome
Allow users to start an interview as guests without entering a GitHub username or signing in.
Guest sessions should not be associated with an account. Interview reports may remain in browser-local storage, but should not be added to account history or persisted as account-owned reports.
Resource limits and safeguards
Guest mode is controlled by CODETRIAL_GUEST_MODE_ENABLED and is disabled by default. It is unavailable when recording is enabled or the required account infrastructure is unavailable.
Guests and signed-in callers share the IP-based TOKEN_RATE_LIMIT, so switching authentication state does not grant an additional request budget. Guest interviews are also limited to two concurrent sessions, and a guest slot is released when the interview ends.
These safeguards limit resource use without treating a guest as an account owner. Guest sessions do not have the per-account ownership or rate-limit identity available to signed-in users.
Scope
This issue covers trying the interview experience without providing a GitHub username. It does not change the existing signed-in interview flow or remove its account-based protections.
