Claude didn't know what to initialize it to, and neither do I.
IIRC, this was put in when the Mac was transitioning to MacOSX from the old multifinder OS. Many many years ago. If we set it false, which was my first inclination, because this surely isn't the OS that Apple shipped in 1997 or so, that would activate any random code that only ran on System 7. And of course that is funny.
It can't be undefined, there is code that's in use that checks this.
