The current Django template instrumentation has some commented code around instrumenting (custom) template tags:

# add_to_builtins('apm.instruments.view')
This seemed to be based on intercepting calls to {% load %} which it seems Django refactored in 1.9. A similar approach can probably be followed to (re) implement this.
