Describe the solution you'd like
Add an optional ingress.className value to the Helm chart (pkg/helm) and render it as spec.ingressClassName on the Ingress when set.
Today templates/ingress.yaml never sets ingressClassName. On a cluster with no default IngressClass, or with several ingress controllers, no controller picks up the Ingress. We deploy the chart behind Traefik and currently patch the rendered manifest with a post-renderer to add the field.
With an empty default (className: ""), the chart renders exactly what it renders today, so the change is backward compatible. Many common charts expose the same value under the same name.
Describe alternatives you've considered
- The
kubernetes.io/ingress.classannotation throughingress.annotations. Kubernetes deprecated it in favor ofspec.ingressClassName, and some controllers no longer honor it. - A Helm post-renderer or Kustomize patch that adds
spec.ingressClassName. It works, but every user has to maintain it outside the chart.
Additional context
I can open a pull request for this: one value in values.yaml, three lines in templates/ingress.yaml, one row in the chart README.
