The issue is in the question editor's validation for the Associate question type, which shows the inline error "Distractors cannot repeat another item". Reproduce it by creating an exercise on unstable and adding an Associate question, then find where the matching pairs and distractors are validated. The issue is marked not open for contribution, and the wording and upper-limit points still need a maintainer decision, so confirm with the maintainers before starting.

- It's possible to have duplicate matching pairs:
The editor allows identical matching pairs (e.g., Pair 3 and Pair 4 both set toThe Colosseum→Italy) to be created and saved without triggering a validation error or warning. - The distractor validation error is duplicated. Entering duplicate distractors (e.g.,
Greeceadded twice) triggers the inline validation error: "Distractors cannot repeat another item". - The current phrasing "Distractors cannot repeat another item" sounds a bit vague. Perhaps we should change it to "Distractors cannot match an existing item or distractor". A note that if I enter a distractor string that is identical to a target answer in one of the pairs (e.g., Pair 1 target is Japan, and Distractor 1 is also set to Japan) then currently I would see the same message ""Distractors cannot repeat another item".
- Seems that there is no upper limit on the number of matching pairs/distractors which could be problematic but not sure at this point...
Expected behavior
The issues should be addressed and fixed.
Steps to reproduce the issue
- Sign in to Studio at
unstable - Go to Channel > Channel editor > New exercise
- Create an exercise and add a question of type "Associate"
- Check the validation
