Start at src/fold.c around line 96, where the folding logic sits beside the existing -s/--spaces handling: read the getopt long-options table and the main fold loop, then compare with the linked fold4 example (main.c#L54) for the punctuation check. A complete change adds the option plus its documentation entry (doc/coreutils.texi), a NEWS line, and tests under tests/fold/, runnable via make check TESTS=tests/fold/. The thread leaves open whether punctuation handling should be locale-dependent, so a maintainer decision is still needed before the scope is settled.

I found folding on punctuation desirable for Piper TTS work.
Would coreutils consider adding a -p --punctuation arg to fold with fallbacks like this isolated working example?
While the example is English centric, the existing -s --spaces arg is also not applicable to some non English (Chinese, Japanese, etc). If the is-non-alphanumeric catch all is not ideal for other languages, specific punctuation could be added later; Spanish(¿¡), Chinese(。、), etc. (maybe based on locale or maybe as an always on check).
