Use case
CDK builds the agent image locally and honours the CDK_DOCKER environment variable, so any Docker-CLI-compatible engine works: for example Finch (open source, from AWS), Podman or Rancher Desktop. Some organisations cannot use Docker Desktop (licensing for larger companies, or managed sign-in requirements that block the daemon), and Finch is a natural choice for deploying to AWS.
Deploying with CDK_DOCKER=finch works, with one gap in the repo's own tooling: //cdk:clean:disk (which runs before every //cdk:deploy) hard-codes docker image prune -f and docker builder prune -f. With Finch, the low-disk prune either fails silently (|| true) or prunes an idle Docker installation instead of the engine actually holding the build cache, so the disk-space safeguard does nothing.
Proposed solution
- In
clean:disk, prune with the engine CDK uses:ENGINE="${CDK_DOCKER:-docker}"; "$ENGINE" image prune -f; "$ENGINE" builder prune -f. Finch supports both subcommands. (Verified locally with Finch 1.17.) - Document
CDK_DOCKERin the deployment guide as the supported way to use a non-Docker engine, with Finch as the example. Finch also buildslinux/arm64natively on Apple Silicon, matching the AgentCore image.
