Start by reproducing the Debian integration using DDD's --debugger flag with trepan3k, checking why DDD loads pydb and does not display source in its GUI. Compare the reported gdb-style p command with trepan3k's pr and pp behavior. I just tried using this with DDD on Debian and it doesn't appear to be compatible at this point. DDD does support a --debugger flag and it seems like it should be able to call trepan3k with that, but it appears to be only loading pydb. But the source isn't being displayed in the DDD gui.
Is trepan3k really gdb compatible? Because I used to just 'p' to print a variable, but appears I have to use 'pr' or 'pp' to do that.
