# [Feature Request] Add official react-native-web support for Storybook and web environments

Please note this text is created after solving this issue locally and asking claude to create this text to see if there is interest in the solution.

## Summary

React Native AMA currently doesn't work in web environments (Storybook, Expo web builds, etc.) because it depends on React Native's full `AccessibilityInfo` API, which is only partially implemented in `react-native-web`.

## Problem

When using `@react-native-ama/core` in web environments, the following error occurs:

TypeError: react_native_1.AccessibilityInfo[contextKey] is not a function

This happens because:
1. **react-native-web** only implements `isScreenReaderEnabled()`, `isReduceMotionEnabled()`, and basic `addEventListener` for `reduceMotionChanged`
2. **AMA expects** additional methods like `isReduceTransparencyEnabled()`, `isBoldTextEnabled()`, `isGrayscaleEnabled()`, etc.
3. **AMA's initialization** in `AMAProvider` fails when these methods are missing

## Current Impact

- **Storybook**: Cannot use AMA components in web Storybook without crashes
- **Expo Web**: AMA components fail when building for web
- **Testing**: Web-based accessibility testing is impossible
- **Development**: Developers can't preview accessibility features in web environments

## Environment

- **@react-native-ama/core**: ^1.2.0
- **react-native-web**: Standard distributions
- **Storybook**: v9.0.15+
- **Expo**: Web builds
- **Browser**: All modern browsers

## Proposed Solution

Add official platform detection and graceful fallbacks for web environments:

### Option 1: Platform Detection (Recommended)

import { Platform } from 'react-native';

const isWeb = Platform.OS === 'web';

// In AMAProvider initialization
React.useEffect(() => {
  if (isWeb) {
    // Use web-compatible subset of AccessibilityInfo
    const webSafeEventsMapping = {
      reduceMotionChanged: 'isReduceMotionEnabled',
      screenReaderChanged: 'isScreenReaderEnabled',
    };
    // Initialize with web-safe events only
  } else {
    // Use full mobile AccessibilityInfo API
    const allEvents = eventsMapping;
    // Initialize with all events
  }
}, []);

### Option 2: Feature Detection

const hasMethod = (methodName) => {
  try {
    return typeof AccessibilityInfo[methodName] === 'function';
  } catch {
    return false;
  }
};

// Filter eventsMapping to only include available methods
const availableEvents = Object.entries(eventsMapping)
  .filter(([eventName, contextKey]) => hasMethod(contextKey))
  .reduce((acc, [eventName, contextKey]) => {
    acc[eventName] = contextKey;
    return acc;
  }, {});

### Option 3: Web-Specific Package

Create `@react-native-ama/web` package that:
- Provides web-compatible `AMAProvider`
- Implements web-specific accessibility features
- Gracefully handles missing mobile APIs

## Benefits

1. **Storybook Support**: Enable AMA components in web Storybook
2. **Expo Web Compatibility**: Full AMA support in Expo web builds
3. **Better Testing**: Web-based accessibility testing capabilities
4. **Developer Experience**: Preview accessibility features during development
5. **Broader Adoption**: Makes AMA usable in more environments

## Current Workaround

We've implemented a comprehensive polyfill that:
- Extends `react-native-web`'s `AccessibilityInfo` with missing methods
- Provides web-compatible implementations where possible (e.g., `prefers-reduced-motion`)
- Uses no-op fallbacks for mobile-specific features
- Implements proper event handling and cleanup
- Integrates seamlessly with Jest testing using virtual mocking

**Complete Solution Files:**
- **📋 Solution Overview**: `.storybook/accessibility-solution-overview.md`
- **Polyfill implementation**: `.storybook/accessibility-info-polyfill.js`
- **Documentation**: `.storybook/accessibility-polyfill-README.md`
- **Comprehensive test suite**: `.storybook/accessibility-info-polyfill.test.js` (43 tests)
- **Jest integration guide**: `.storybook/jest-conflict-fix-summary.md`
- **GitHub issue template**: `.storybook/react-native-ama-issue-template.md`

**Key Features:**
- ✅ Runtime monkey-patching of both `react-native` and `react-native-web` modules
- ✅ Real web accessibility implementations where possible
- ✅ Comprehensive error handling and logging
- ✅ Jest virtual mocking compatibility
- ✅ ARIA live regions for announcements
- ✅ Speech synthesis integration
- ✅ Full TypeScript JSDoc documentation

This polyfill successfully enables AMA in Storybook, Expo web builds, and Jest testing environments. Official support would benefit the entire React Native accessibility community.

## Implementation Ideas

### 1. Core Changes

**`src/components/AMAProvider.tsx`:**

import { Platform } from 'react-native';

// Define web-safe event mappings
const webEventsMapping = {
  reduceMotionChanged: 'isReduceMotionEnabled',
  screenReaderChanged: 'isScreenReaderEnabled',
};

const fullEventsMapping = {
  reduceTransparencyChanged: 'isReduceTransparencyEnabled',
  reduceMotionChanged: 'isReduceMotionEnabled',
  grayscaleChanged: 'isGrayscaleEnabled',
  boldTextChanged: 'isBoldTextEnabled',
  invertColorsChanged: 'isInvertColorsEnabled',
  screenReaderChanged: 'isScreenReaderEnabled',
};

// Use appropriate mapping based on platform
const eventsMapping = Platform.OS === 'web' ? webEventsMapping : fullEventsMapping;

### 2. Web Utilities

Create `src/utils/web-accessibility.ts`:

export const createWebAccessibilityInfo = () => {
  // Extend react-native-web's AccessibilityInfo with missing methods
  const webPolyfill = {
    isReduceTransparencyEnabled: () => Promise.resolve(false),
    isBoldTextEnabled: () => Promise.resolve(false),
    // ... other methods
  };

  return webPolyfill;
};

### 3. Documentation

- Add web setup guide to README
- Document Storybook integration
- Provide Expo web examples
- List web limitations and differences

## Testing

We've created a comprehensive test suite (43 tests) that demonstrates the polyfill's reliability:

### Test Coverage
- ✅ **All accessibility methods** - Complete API coverage
- ✅ **Event listener functionality** - Real and mock event handling
- ✅ **Error handling** - Graceful degradation in all scenarios
- ✅ **Browser compatibility** - Works across all modern browsers
- ✅ **Jest integration** - Virtual mocking for seamless testing
- ✅ **ARIA live regions** - Web-standard accessibility announcements
- ✅ **Speech synthesis** - Browser-native text-to-speech integration

### Jest Integration
Our solution includes proper Jest virtual mocking to avoid module resolution conflicts:

// Jest setup example
jest.mock("@react-native-ama/internal/dist/utils/logger.js", () => {
  return { /* mock implementation */ };
}, { virtual: true }); // Prevents "Cannot find module" errors

This testing approach could be adapted for official AMA web support.

## Community Impact

This would enable:
- **Design Systems**: Using AMA in component libraries
- **Documentation**: Better accessibility documentation with live examples
- **Training**: Easier accessibility education with web examples
- **Development**: Faster iteration with web preview

## Alternative Solutions Considered

1. **Fork react-native-web**: Too invasive, maintenance burden
2. **Separate web library**: Fragmenting the ecosystem
3. **Runtime polyfill**: Current approach, but not ideal for everyone
