Summary
The current keyboard shortcut overlay displays key names as plain text inside a rounded box. While functional, it lacks visual variety and customization options.
Proposal
Integrate themed keycap styles that give users control over how keyboard shortcuts appear in their recordings:
- Multiple keycap styles: Minimal, Apple, PBT, Retro, M0116
- Color themes: Black, White, Ocean, Cyberpunk, Sakura, etc.
- 2D / 3D toggle: Flat or depth-rendered keycaps
- Chassis toggle: Optional keyboard frame around keycaps
I've built an open-source keycap design system called Key23 that implements these styles. A working PR is available at #2406.
Implementation notes
- Frontend: SolidJS SVG components with theme palettes
- Backend: Theme-aware color mapping in the Rust renderer for export consistency
- No breaking changes to existing keyboard functionality
