Start with src/paperpi/scheduler.py and src/paperpi/config.py, then read the existing scheduler tests that use a pretend clock. Trace how scheduled screen writes and clean_every work before deciding how quiet windows affect them. Done means multiple daily or weekly windows, including ones that cross midnight, limit screen writes as specified, and are applied on config reload; the open behavior questions need answers first.

Idea from txoof (2026-10-23), after the 9.7" ran 21 hours as a service: fewer screen refreshes at times nobody looks, to spare the screen.

What

Quiet hours: one or more time windows in which the screen doesn't change, or changes only once or twice an hour.

  • Several windows; a window may cross midnight; the Pi's local time, so summer and winter time are handled.
  • During a window only screen writes are limited; plugins keep fetching (see open point 3), so the first picture after the window is current.
  • The hourly full clear (clean_every) is skipped during a window and done once at its end.
  • With 1 or 2 writes per hour, each write shows the plugin that is current at that moment.
  • Health check: no change needed (healthy doesn't require a recent screen write).
  • Applied at config reload. The web form (M5) comes later, separately.

Open points (ask txoof one at a time)

  1. With 0 writes the last picture stays, possibly a clock with the wrong time. At the start of a window: show "Quiet until 07:00", go blank, or keep the last picture?
  2. May a music plugin that starts playing break through quiet hours (as it interrupts other plugins now, #284)?
  3. Do plugins also stop fetching in a window (fewer network requests), or only stop drawing?
