Compare how each selects the version, then investigate whether they can share configuration or whether tests can reuse Compose. Done means both use one source for the desired MySQL version; the issue leaves the implementation choice open.

The test framework has the ability to launch mysql ( via docker. )
The mysql version is hard-coded there ( see: https://github.com/shift-org/shift-docs/blob/52e8d9589f6e81ce42b38e716662c8bced8ff28b/app/test/db_setup.js#L44 )

The docker compose also has a mysql version ( see: https://github.com/shift-org/shift-docs/blob/52e8d9589f6e81ce42b38e716662c8bced8ff28b/docker-compose.yml#L31 )

It is objectively terrible to have to keep them synchronized; but not exactly sure what the solution is.

  • both read from some sort of common config file?
  • both read from some common environmental var?
  • can testing read or re-use the docker-compose?
  • get rid of the ./shift bash and launch everything using npm scripts? ( i jest. sort of. )
  • ...?
