Goal

updateUserName accepts display names longer than 50 characters, so an embedding app can label a collaborator with their full name without cutting it.

Done when:

  • isValidUserName allows a larger maximum (or one an embedder can rely on for full names, e.g. 100+ characters).
  • The presence and attribution UI handles long names without breaking layout (e.g. ellipsis).

Why

  • Embedders pass real full names. The Posit Connect Quarto Hub editor (connect-satellites quartohub) labels each collaborator with their Connect first and last name. Names longer than 50 characters exist, and updateUserName throws on them (Invalid user name: must be 1-50 characters), which would stop the editor from opening.
  • The current workaround drops information. The embedder cuts the name to 50 characters before calling updateUserName, so long names show cut off in attribution and on cursors.
