Done means the listed observability components work without DigitalOcean Insights, Grafana is TLS-protected with configurable credentials, alerts and logs function, persistence survives restarts, and defaults are documented.

Context
The 20-monitoring layer should provide Kubernetes observability without depending on DigitalOcean Insights for the MVP.

Scope

  • Install kube-prometheus-stack as the primary monitoring module.
  • Include Prometheus, Grafana and Alertmanager.
  • Install Loki as a separate module.
  • Install Grafana Alloy for Kubernetes pod/event log collection; do not introduce Promtail.
  • Use DigitalOcean Block Storage for Prometheus and Loki persistence.
  • Expose Grafana through the public Gateway with TLS.
  • Use a configurable non-default Grafana operator username (for example platform-operator).
  • Source Grafana credentials, SMTP credentials and Slack webhook credentials from External Secrets.
  • Ship Kubernetes dashboards and alert rules from modules-kubernetes.
  • Limit MVP metrics to Kubernetes and workloads; defer DigitalOcean Insights/API integration.

Acceptance criteria

  • Prometheus reports healthy Kubernetes targets and core workload metrics.
  • Loki receives pod logs and Grafana can query them.
  • Grafana is reachable through the configured public endpoint and is protected by TLS and non-default credentials.
  • Alertmanager can deliver to email and Slack when configured.
  • Persistent data survives pod restarts.
  • Resource, retention and storage defaults are documented.
