This is a design proposal, not a ready task: it asks whether to add a regression-based line-noise method to notch_filter or to create mne.preprocessing.remove_line_noise(), and it replaces the existing spectrum_fit method. Read the linked threads (#7577, cbrnr/mnextend#9, pyprep#213) and wait for maintainer agreement on the API before touching code. Done would mean a maintainer-approved design followed by an implementation and tests against spectrum_fit.

I was wondering whether we could actually port the method to mne, long term. Replacing the current "spectrum_fit" method, which has been a pain point in the past, as discussed in

You were mentioning that you needed the flexibility and speed of shipping it on your own, and I totally understand that. But would you be open to having this method in mne, too? It'd make adoption easier in pyprep.

Of course, we need a few other stakeholders to agree that this would be an improvement, too. cc @larsoner for example.

Regarding integration here, the func could be exposed as:

  1. An additional method in notch_filter(method="regression") (or replacing spectrum_fit), and/or
  2. A dedicated preprocessing function: mne.preprocessing.remove_line_noise().
