Start by checking the existing ydotoold typing backend and how insertion starts and stops it. Then prototype KDE Plasma RemoteDesktop portal typing and compare minimum supported versions, Unicode behavior, latency, reliability, restore-token handling, and session lifetime with ydotool. Done means those questions are answered and the experimental results clarify whether the backend is viable; the issue names no files or tests.

Summary (experimental)

On KDE Plasma, HermesKey types via ydotoold, a session-long daemon with /dev/uinput access. Any process running as the user can send keystrokes through it into any window (terminals, password/polkit prompts), which bypasses Wayland's normal input isolation. This comes with ydotool's design, not a HermesKey bug, but it is the largest practical risk in the current architecture.

Experiment (KDE Plasma only)

Prototype a typing/paste backend using the XDG Desktop Portal RemoteDesktop interface via xdg-desktop-portal-kde:

  • the user approves keyboard access once via the portal dialog; Plasma 6 can remember that approval (restore tokens);
  • send keysyms/keycodes with NotifyKeyboardKeysym / NotifyKeyboardKeycode, or evaluate the newer libei route (ConnectToEIS, Plasma 6.1+);
  • no /dev/uinput access and no persistent socket other processes can use.

Questions to answer

  • Minimum Plasma / xdg-desktop-portal-kde version needed.
  • Is per-character keysym injection Unicode-safe? It could remove the clipboard requirement for non-ASCII text.
  • Latency and reliability compared with ydotool; handling of restore tokens.
  • Where the portal session lives (a small long-lived helper vs per-invocation).

Interim mitigation

Start ydotoold only for the duration of an insertion and stop it afterwards, shrinking the window in which other processes can use it.

Scope

KDE Plasma only. This is not a commitment to support other desktops. Status: experimental. May not ship; ydotool remains the default until the results are clear.
