Start by locating where PerlOnJava generates the MakeMaker recipe containing jperl -MAlien::Build::MM=cmd -e prefix site; compare its arguments with the system-Perl-generated command shown in the issue. Reproduce the failure with the named Alien-Ninja or Alien-Meson installation if possible. Done means the generated command supplies the required install directories and the CPAN installation proceeds past the prefix step.

Summary

PerlOnJava's generated MakeMaker recipe omits the install-directory arguments expected by Alien::Build::MM. This prevents installation of Alien::Ninja and Alien::Meson under CPAN, even though their upstream tests pass under system Perl.

Reproduction

CPAN run 20261005-091352-31215 failed while installing Alien-Ninja-0.03 as a configure prerequisite of Alien-libui-0.03 (it also failed for Alien-Meson-0.06). The generated command was:

jperl -MAlien::Build::MM=cmd -e prefix site

Alien::Build::MM expects the install directories after site. With no directory argument, it passes an undefined value to Path::Tiny, producing:

Path::Tiny paths require defined, positive-length parts

The system-Perl-generated Makefile includes $(INSTALLARCHLIB) $(INSTALLSITEARCH) $(INSTALLVENDORARCH) in this command, and the exact Alien-Ninja-0.03 distribution installs successfully with system Perl.

Results

  • System Perl 5.42.2: isolated installation of the exact distribution and missing prerequisites completed; upstream suite passed (2 files, 5 tests).
  • PerlOnJava JVM backend: make fails at the Alien::Build::MM prefix step in run 20261005-091352-31215.
  • PerlOnJava interpreter backend: not tested.
  • Environment: macOS 15.6, arm64, Java 24.0.2. Current PerlOnJava checkout version: a0b6a6256 (issue observed in the archived CPAN run).

Expected

The PerlOnJava-generated Makefile should pass all required install-directory values to Alien::Build::MM, allowing these pure-Perl Alien distributions to finish installation and proceed to their tests.
