Start by searching the plugin for CodeDiffCharInsert and CodeDiffCharDelete and for where line-level insert/delete highlights are applied. Trace how side-by-side, inline, merge and result views each assign highlights, then separate line-wide text highlighting from character-level highlighting inside modified lines. Done means inserted/deleted lines use configurable line-level colors by default, character highlights appear only for changed text within modified lines, and all four views behave consistently. #450 was a closed unmerged attempt, so review it for prior context before starting.

Text on inserted and deleted lines with no corresponding line on the opposite side currently receives CodeDiffCharInsert or CodeDiffCharDelete. This makes the entire text look like a character-level change instead of reserving the stronger highlight for changed text within modified lines.

Expected behavior:

  • Inserted and deleted lines use line-level text highlights.
  • Character-level highlights are limited to changed text within modified lines.
  • The inserted/deleted line text colors can be configured independently and default to the corresponding line-level colors.
  • The behavior is consistent across side-by-side, inline, merge, and result views.

Related to #325, but narrower: this concerns the text highlight applied to lines without a corresponding line, rather than a separate full-row highlight for modified lines.
