Summary

Add optional support for the OpenSSF Security Insights file (security-insights.yml) as an additional input and output alongside .project/, which remains darnit's primary mechanism for project metadata.

Scope

  • Import: when a repository has a Security Insights file, read the fields that correspond to darnit context keys (for example security contact, vulnerability reporting policy, maintainers) and surface them as values asserted by the project, with their origin recorded. They should not overwrite values already confirmed in .project/.
  • Export (optional): generate or update a Security Insights file from values that have been confirmed in .project/. Unconfirmed candidates must never be written.
  • Tests with sample Security Insights files covering the schema versions currently in use.

Out of scope

  • Replacing .project/ or changing how darnit stores confirmed context.

Notes for contributors

Other OpenSSF tooling (for example the OSPS Baseline Privateer plugin and AMPEL policies) reads Security Insights, so this mainly improves interoperability. The maintainers are not planning to build this themselves; contributions are welcome.
