What would you like containerbase to do?

Block Ubuntu's git package once git comes from our prebuild, so apt doesn't install a second git into /usr/bin.

Background

Nothing in containerbase installs git with apt except install-tool git itself, but custom images (install-apt git), Renovate post-upgrade commands and apt packages with a hard dependency on git (e.g. Ubuntu's git-lfs, git-man) would pull Ubuntu's git.

Proposal

  • A virtual package: after installing the prebuild, register a minimal deb built with dpkg-deb (e.g. containerbase-git) with Provides: git (= 1:<version>), so packages depending on git, including versioned dependencies, are satisfied by our build. install-tool git updates it with each install.
  • An apt pin in /etc/apt/preferences.d/containerbase-git with Package: git git-man, Pin: release *, Pin-Priority: -1, so a direct apt install git fails instead of silently adding Ubuntu's git.
  • Document both for custom images.
