Check how the catalog validator handles entry URLs and metadata, and add the requested uniqueness, HTTPS, and H1/name checks. Why it matters
license_spdx is the field tools and filters key on, and it is empty for 105 of 414 entries. 93 of those are legitimately custom/varies/unknown, but 12 are aliases of ids other entries already use, so the same licence filters differently depending on who wrote the entry. A handful of other mechanical defects showed up in the same audit.

Evidence (data audit 2026-10-21)

  • license values with no SPDX mapping that should have one: GPL-3.0 (7 entries), GPL-2.0 (2), LGPL-3.0 (1), BSD (1), CC-BY (1). Elsewhere the catalog uses GPL-3.0-or-later, GPL-2.0-or-later, BSD-3-Clause, CC-BY-4.0.
  • catalog/audio/filmmusic-ende.md is CC-BY with attribution_required: false; CONTRIBUTING allows that only with an "Attribution waived" Notes line. Confirm one exists or flip the flag.
  • Two http:// entry URLs: catalog/animation/cmu-mocap.md, catalog/characters/makehuman.md; 10 more http:// links in bodies.
  • One URL shared by two entries: blender.org/download/demo-files/#assets in catalog/animation/blender-ellie-poses.md and catalog/characters/blender-human-base-meshes.md. Point each at its own anchor or merge.
  • 24 entries whose # H1 differs from name (for example catalog/3d/kaykit.md: name "KayKit (Kay Lousberg)", H1 "KayKit").
  • 5 entry URLs are search pages with query strings (fab.com/search?is_free=1 and similar), which break when the host changes its search UI.

Suggested approach

  1. Map the 12 aliases to the right SPDX id after checking each source for "or later" vs "only" (do not guess); add the aliases to site/value-aliases.json so the validator rejects them going forward.
  2. Fix the http URLs and the duplicate URL; add a validator rule that an entry url must be unique and https.
  3. Add a check (warning is fine) that H1 equals name.
  4. Replace search-page URLs with a stable listing page where one exists; otherwise note the fragility in Notes.

Done when
license_spdx is set for every entry whose license is a real SPDX licence, the new validator rules pass, and the defects above are gone.
