The bug-report template's sponsorship checklist includes a fixed example issue. When a submitted report keeps the template's ordinary GitHub issue URL, GitHub creates a backlink on the example issue. Unrelated reports therefore accumulate in its timeline even though they do not discuss or depend on it.

This is a property of the link domain, not the visible link text. Labeling the link "example" does not prevent the cross-reference.

Describe the solution you'd like

Change only the hostname of the sponsorship example URL in .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug_report.md from github.com to redirect.github.com.

GitHub documents this domain specifically for avoiding backlinks. The link still opens the example issue, but copying it into a new report does not create a backlink there. GitHub also notes that these links do not show a hover preview.

Keep ordinary references to genuinely related issues and PR-closing references unchanged.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Removing the example would avoid the backlink but lose the useful sponsorship reference. Asking every reporter to remove it would leave the default template causing noise. Using GitHub's documented redirect domain preserves the example and fixes the default.

Additional context

Audited the current master templates at commit 57164fa6d7642d06e96013e2eb5e842abeb83705:

  • The affected URL is on line 17 of the bug-report template.
  • .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md has no fixed example issue, pull-request, or commit URL. Its existing repository and documentation links do not need this change.
  • The root-level .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE.md, feature-request template, and announcement template contain no equivalent example link.

This is a one-link template change; it does not affect generated clients, servers, or generator behavior.
