Start by reading AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, and package.json; inspect .vscode/settings.json, jsconfig.json, data/loader.js, and index.html. Run the existing build and ESLint commands to understand the current setup. The issue lists several optional, cross-cutting proposals without choosing scope or defining acceptance criteria, so agree on a specific improvement before starting.

Getting started on this repo is harder than it should be. Better DX = more contributors, and it's nicer to work on for everyone.
Some exploration paths:

Devcontainer

A devcontainer is a shared Docker, so a new contributor can just open the project and start coding with zero setup.

Right now there's no .devcontainer. To get started you need Node, Python and 7z (npm i, npm run build, serve.py).

Would be nice if opening the repo in VS Code or Codespaces, then npm i && npm start, just worked.

Prettier

Prettier would give the whole repo one consistent style.

It's not installed and there's no config file. CONTRIBUTING.md actually tells VS Code users to turn off format on save, and .vscode/settings.json have that workaround.

Eslint script

CI already runs npx eslint on PRs, but there's no npm run lint. Would be good to have it locally.

True ESM (cleanup)

Having ESM everywhere can be cool.

  • jsconfig.json file uses "commonjs" instead of "module".
  • remove missing classic script usage, like data/loader.js file that always uses document.currentScript.
  • index.html uses classic <script> instead of script module

IDK if that has some implications

Agent conventions / skills

There is now an AGENTS.md explaining the project overall. A nice next step could be repo skills (e.g. an .agents dir with skills to explain how to build, how to build core feature...).
