Research direction

The bug is in the stat utility's --format handling: a lone \n or a UTF-8 character is dropped, while GNU stat prints it. Reproduce with ./stat --format $'%i\n' / from target/debug and compare with GNU stat. Pull request #15354 is already open against this issue, so check its diff and review thread before starting. Done means the output matches GNU stat for the escape and UTF-8 cases.
