Research direction

Start with the attached issue_tester.zip and results.html, then run just repro to reproduce the reported differences between GNU coreutils 9.7 and uutils. The report spans many commands and behaviors, so identify a specific failing case and its corresponding code and tests before assessing scope. Done means the selected case matches GNU's reported output, exit status, and file effects.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

I set up a dedicated container image where an AI could experiment freely with all kinds of options and flag combinations, without me worrying that it might break something important. It built a differential fuzzer that runs GNU coreutils 9.12 and uutils side by side and compares stdout, stderr, exit status and the resulting files.

just repro on project below, runs all the tests on found items to verify its current state.

fuzzer - fuzzer.zip
results in a html format - report.zip

Everything below this line was written entirely by AI.

  • GNU coreutils: ls (GNU coreutils) 9.12
  • uutils (upstream main, release build): 7ecdfad 2026-10-12 chore(deps): update rust crate zip to v9.0.2
  • Every command ran with LC_ALL=C, TZ=UTC and stdin redirected from a regular file (stdin.txt)
GNU coreutils 9.12 vs uutils(only some part of differences)
