Research direction
The issue describes a broad instrument concept split into five slices, but does not name implementation files, tests, or entry points. Start by reading the existing Group track, Instrument track, and MIDI routing code to understand the current building blocks. Before starting, identify which slice is ready as its own issue; completion criteria will depend on that slice.
Written by the indexing model from the issue text.
Description
Idea
Build a Digitakt-style instrument out of what transit already has: a Group track holding Instrument tracks, each with a sampler and its own insert chain, group inserts on the summed output, and a mapping that decides which incoming notes reach which child. Ableton's Drum Rack and Logic's Drum Machine Designer both use this summing-stack-of-child-chains model, so the shape follows the convention; the step-level parameter locks below are where transit can do better.
Slices (each its own issue when it starts)
- Key-zone map on the Group: one MIDI input is split to children by note range, velocity range or single note; choke groups (a closed hat cuts the open one); works with any instrument plug-in on the children. Proves the workflow before a native sampler exists.
- Group macros: eight knobs on the Group fanning out to child parameters, mappable with MIDI Learn (which already targets plug-in parameters).
- Kit preset: save and load the Group with its children, samples and chains as one file, reopenable in any session.
- Native sampler device: one-shot and sliced playback with start, end, pitch, filter, amp envelope and choke.
- Step parameter locks and trig conditions: per-step values for any child parameter, probability, every-Nth-pass, retrig, attached to the note in the step editor.
Order and placement
After the v0.3.0 stability work. Pairs with the hardware items (Overbridge, MIDI clock follow) in the same release theme.
