Research direction

Start in the user's ~/.claude settings and locate the PreToolUse Bash hook that matches git commit, rebase, cherry-pick, or merge. Reproduce the blocked git merge-base --is-ancestor freshness check from the primary checkout, then verify that the hook still blocks the listed write operations while allowing this read-only command.

Description

bug

The PreToolUse Bash hook matches the regex git ... (commit|rebase|cherry-pick|merge)\b. Since \b matches before a hyphen, git merge-base --is-ancestor also counts as a merge. Run from the primary checkout, which is on main, the read-only freshness check is blocked (seen 2026-09-26 while landing #481). Fix: require whitespace or end of string after the verb instead of \b. The hook lives in the user's settings (~/.claude), not in this repo.
