Research direction

Reproduce with the two commands in the issue after supabase init and supabase functions new. Trace how experimental stack start --runtime native brings up the functions service versus how functions serve --env-file tries to restore or restart that service (the UUID “Dependent … blocks restart” error). Done when functions serve after a plain supabase start takes over the functions service with the env file, without needing --exclude functions.

Description

🐛 Bug supabase/cli
Affected area

Local development / Edge Functions

Supabase CLI version

2.119.0

Operating system

macOS 26.3 (Apple silicon)

Installation method

npm (supabase package)

Command
SUPABASE_EXPERIMENTAL_STACK=1 supabase start --runtime native
SUPABASE_EXPERIMENTAL_STACK=1 supabase functions serve --env-file fn.env --output-format text
Actual output
Failed to restore Functions configuration: Dependent f95d59a8-3a20-4afc-98e4-68072231edc6 blocks restart of 57bed916-1c59-44cc-a5b0-e501cc2577bb
Dependent f95d59a8-3a20-4afc-98e4-68072231edc6 blocks restart of 57bed916-1c59-44cc-a5b0-e501cc2577bb
Try rerunning the command with --debug to troubleshoot the error.

The "Running multiple local projects" guide says "functions serve needs a running local project. Start one with supabase start first", which is exactly this sequence.

Workaround: start with supabase start --runtime native --exclude functions; then functions serve --env-file runs, and the env file reaches the functions.

Expected behavior

functions serve takes over the stack's functions service (or restarts it with the given --env-file) after a plain supabase start.

Steps to reproduce
  1. mkdir repro && cd repro && git init && supabase init && supabase functions new hello
  2. echo FOO=bar > fn.env
  3. Run the two commands above.

I investigated this with help from an AI coding assistant (Claude Code), which also drafted this text. The results above come from real runs.
