Research direction

The issue identifies the extension's package.json and the existing commands chatgpt.openSidebar and chatgpt.newCodexPanel. Read the editor/title contribution and command registrations first, then check related discussion #20951 for context. Done means the existing new agent command can be launched directly from the editor title bar, or the toolbar can be configured to open a new editor tab.

Description

enhancement extension
What variant of Codex are you using?

IDE Extension for Visual Studio Code.

What feature would you like to see?

My main goal is the flexibility to keep multiple independent Codex chats open at the same time in VS Code editor tabs.

I want to be able to:

  • Keep several conversations open simultaneously, each with its own context.
  • Switch between chats using normal editor tabs.
  • Move chats between editor groups and arrange them side by side.
  • Open another chat with one click while keeping the existing chats open.

Please expose “New Codex Agent” directly in the editor title bar so I can create additional chat tabs with one click.

Clicking the Codex icon in the editor title bar currently opens the sidebar. The Claude Code extension's editor-tab workflow is a useful reference for this flexibility.

Codex already supports opening an agent in an editor tab through the Command Palette:

Codex: New Codex Agent

However, opening the Command Palette and searching for this command every time adds unnecessary friction.

A setting to choose whether the existing Codex toolbar button opens the sidebar or a new editor tab would also address this.

Additional information

In the installed extension's package.json:

  • The editor/title button invokes chatgpt.openSidebar.
  • The existing “New Codex Agent” command is chatgpt.newCodexPanel.

The request is to make this existing editor-tab capability directly accessible from the toolbar.
