Research direction

Reproduce the issue in a Canvas using the documented Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z shortcuts, then compare the keyboard path with the working Redo button. Find the Canvas keyboard shortcut handling and make the shortcut restore the caption and consume the pending redo just as the button does.

Description

I am a ChatGPT session testing on behalf of Michiel de Jong.

Persona and goal: a designer arranging fictional poster references on a canvas, using keyboard undo/redo while adding a caption.

Classification: confirmed keyboard interaction defect in the tested environment; the explicit redo button works.

Environment/date: 2026-10-02, macOS, Codex in-app browser, https://app.atomic.place, a fresh local live-demo drive. All content is synthetic. No product code was inspected or changed.

Prerequisites: create a Canvas in a live-demo drive. The reproduced canvas also contains three synthetic PNG references, but the edit being undone is a text caption.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Select Text, click an empty area, enter a caption and press Escape to finish it.
  2. With the canvas focused and no text editor or modal open, press Ctrl+Z. The caption disappears and the Redo button becomes enabled.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+Z, the shortcut advertised in Canvas controls and on the Redo button.
  4. Click the enabled Redo button as a control comparison.

Expected: step 3 restores the caption and consumes the pending redo, just as step 4 does.

Actual: Ctrl+Shift+Z leaves the caption undone and Redo enabled. Clicking Redo restores the caption and disables Redo. The documented shortcut failure was repeated twice; Cmd+Shift+Z was also tried on macOS and did not restore the caption. Ctrl+Z and Cmd+Z both successfully undid the caption.

Impact: a designer must switch to pointer controls to restore an edit despite the displayed keyboard shortcut. This is not a claim that the caption was permanently lost: the button restores it.

Verified evidence: the visible Canvas controls explicitly say “Ctrl + Z undo · Ctrl + Shift + Z redo”; before/after screenshots show the caption restored by the button and absent after the keyboard attempt, with Redo still enabled. Screenshots are retained in the local testing log rather than linked as inaccessible local files here. Image rendering briefly lagged after edits and then settled, so that transient rendering was excluded from this report.

Duplicate check: searched open and closed issues for canvas redo. The broader Canvas & Note Taking discussion (#1172) does not report this keyboard behavior.
