Research direction

This is a manual device checklist, not a code change, and it depends on #20 shipping first and on a physical Fire TV Stick. Install the release containing #20 and work through the Keyboard and Recent Searches boxes in Search, profile naming and the Channel manager. If OK does not open the keyboard, check whether the key event reaches the handler that sets showKeyboardOnFocus in DeviceTextField. Done when every box is ticked or has its own bug filed.

Description

needs-triage

This was generated by AI during triage.

Follows #20, which needs to ship first. Owner task: it needs a physical Fire TV Stick, the same model as the primary device.

Why

The keyboard fix in #20 is going in without a check on a real device, because no stick is available yet. Search couldn't be used on a Fire TV Stick: the box highlighted, but no keyboard opened, Select did nothing and dictation didn't work.

The cause was worked out by reading the code and Compose's compiled code, and the tests only run on Robolectric, so none of this has been seen working on Fire OS. #58 (the device keyboard) also left its manual checks undone, so the mic has never been confirmed either.

What to check

Install the release containing #20 on the stick.

Keyboard

In Search, profile naming and the Channel manager's search:

  • The highlight landing on the box leaves the keyboard shut
  • OK opens the keyboard
  • What's typed appears in the box
  • Holding the mic button while the keyboard is open types the spoken words
  • Back closes the keyboard without leaving the screen
  • OK opens the keyboard again after Back closed it
  • The keyboard's action key closes it and carries on: Search shows results, and Done saves a profile name
  • Up and Down leave the box when the keyboard is shut
Recent Searches
  • Opening a result saves the search; typing alone doesn't
  • With the box empty, Down reaches the Recent Searches and "Clear recent searches"
  • Choosing one runs it and the highlight lands on the first result
  • The Menu button and holding Select on an entry both open the panel with Remove
  • Removing an entry leaves the highlight on a neighbour, or in the box if none are left
  • Clearing them leaves the highlight in the box
  • Another Profile doesn't see them

If something fails

File a bug for each failure, with what happened on screen and the Fire OS version.

If OK still doesn't open the keyboard, the diagnosis in #20 was wrong or incomplete. DeviceTextField turns on showKeyboardOnFocus when OK is pressed, so that Compose starts an input session and shows the keyboard. Start by finding out whether the key event reaches that handler at all, and whether the session starts.

Done when

Every box above is ticked, or has its own bug filed.
