Research direction

This is a design question for the Web MLS API explainer, and the payload names no source file or test. Start by reading the linked Partial MLS draft (draft-ietf-mls-partial-02) to see which operations partial clients can and cannot perform. Done means the explainer states how an application discovers full or partial mode, which operations each mode supports, and what authentication guarantees differ.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

Please consider how the Web MLS API could support Partial MLS clients for large groups, webinars, and broadcast audiences. The API should let an application choose or discover whether a group is joined as a full or partial client, and explain which operations each mode supports.

Few things that might be needed

  1. API processing annotated Welcomes and Commits,
  2. How it receives sender-authenticated messages with membership proofs.
  3. The API should clear that partial clients cannot create Commits, may authenticate other members on demand, and have different authentication guarantees.

These capabilities and limitations are described in the current [Partial MLS draft](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-ietf-mls-partial-02).
