Research direction

Start by locating the core API tests and the code that configures their live server connection. Trace how responses are currently obtained, then determine how tests can default to mocks while retaining an explicit live-server mode. Done means the automated suite no longer requires a live server by default and the live path remains available when requested.

Description

waffle:backlog

The tests currently talk to a live server, which is great for dev testing but not ideal for an automated suite. We should change them to use mocked responses by default, but still be able to talk to a live server if requested explicitly.
