Research direction

Find the render_map_tool page code that draws the selected route and handles selfFetchDirections; start by tracing how it receives route alternatives when alternatives: true is set. Add map selection for the gray alternative lines and update the summary chip with the selected route’s duration, distance, and driving traffic summary. Done when users can see and select alternatives on the map; the optional time labels can be treated as follow-up scope.

Description

enhancement

Problem

directions_tool can return alternatives, and the map already draws the route at selectedRouteIndex, but the user can't see or choose between the alternatives on the map. Picking one means asking the model to re-render.

Proposal

  • Draw the alternatives as gray lines under the selected route.
  • Clicking one selects it: highlight it, and update the summary chip with its duration and distance (and its traffic summary when the profile is driving-traffic).
  • Optional: show a small label on each alternative, for example "+4 min".

Notes

  • The page already fetches the routes itself (selfFetchDirections), so the alternatives are in hand when alternatives: true is set. No new API calls are needed.
  • The model doesn't learn which route the user picked; see #287.
