Research direction

Begin with the upstream Launchpad bug 2034986 and compare its status with this report; the issue names no mintupgrade file or test. The documented outcome is that the upgrade completes and the fonts recover after reboot, so seek maintainer direction before changing code.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

During the upgrade from Mint 21.3 to Mint 22, the desktop fonts become unreadable:

This is is a know issue upstream: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/2034986.

The upgrade tool does not use the system fonts (it specifically uses Sans instead) so it is not impacted by this issue.

During the upgrade we recommend users ignore this issue and continue until the upgrade is finished.

Once the upgrade is successful, this issue goes away upon reboot.
